£31

Plum pudding, some fresh pepper and baking spice, with mocha notes, a little anise and soft herbs, and fine tannins. Mostly Grenache with a little Syrah, this certainly speaks of its southern Rhone sites. It’s warming and luscious.

Château Guillaumette, Grand Vin de Bordeaux. France

£29

Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is proof that there’s still great value, and great quality wines to be had from  Bordeaux. Plums, sweet berries and a little cassis, almost summer pudding like, with gentle cedar-y notes and a little cinnamon bark.

Bourgogne Pinot Noir ‘Les Brûlis’ Domaine de Mauperthuis 2020.

Considering the lush Pinot character – effortless smoky summer fruits – just picked redcurrants and raspberries and gamey, orange-peel and sandalwood notes – the beautiful balance and opulent texture this wine offers, frankly, it’s a steal.

Amarone Monte Santoccio di Nicola Ferrari 2016. Italy

£68                                                          Spices, hints of leather, a fanfare of bitter red fruit, discrete heat… a joyous experience and it finishes dry and noble. An Amarone which does everything it should do and more.
